No Bills, No Worries

Families moving into a new housing development in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, could avoid energy bills entirely for up to ten years under a new initiative led by Octopus Energy and Prosperity Group.

The project will deliver 300 “Zero Bills” homes, each fitted with green technologies such as heat pumps, solar panels and battery storage—designed to generate and store enough energy to eliminate household energy costs. The first homes are expected to be completed in 2028, with residents moving in later that year.

The launch comes as energy prices remain volatile, with the UK price cap currently at £1,641 and forecast to rise, adding pressure on households.

This development forms part of a wider push by Octopus Energy, which has already approved more than 6,000 Zero Bills homes and aims to scale the initiative to 100,000 by 2030.

Demand for energy-saving technology is also growing rapidly, with company data showing heat pump sales up 103% and solar panel installations up 78%, as more households look to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.

Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, said the scheme offers protection against unpredictable energy costs, while Prosperity Group chairman Joe Billingham added it provides a way to future-proof homes against tightening environmental standards.
